Freelance filmmaker
Working as a freelance charity filmmaker, I filmed and edited this charity film video production. Commissioned by the Koestler Trust it explains the story behind their 2010 annual exhibition. The exhibition was installed at the Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank in London.
Documentary production
For the first time, victims of serious crime curated the Art by Offenders exhibition 2010. The film tells the story of how the final artworks were chosen by the curators and followed them through to the opening day of their exhibition. The curators were given some training to help them with the curating process which included a trip to London’s Hayward Gallery. The curators were also assisted by curating project coordinator Helen Sandler. During interviews with the victims of crime, we hear how they feel about selecting artworks made by offenders, secure patients and detainees. The film also contains a review of the exhibition as it was installed at Festival Hall.
Editing documentaries
I enjoy the whole film-making and editing process for these type of films. I suppose it’ an observational documentary type film with no set performances or scripting. The story comes together in the edit. All the music edited into the film was selected from the hundreds of musical entries to the 2010 Koestler awards. Selecting the music from all the award entries is one of the highlights for me. Though it does take many days to listen to the hundreds of tracks, its good to know that I have found the best music suited for the film. This video was edited using an Avid Media Composer.
Charity film video production
A copy of the film was uploaded to YouTube and sent to all UK’s prisons, secure institutions and youth offending centres. The film helps to illustrate how art can be used to help rehabilitate offenders. The Koestler Trust uses the film as a promotional and marketing video to help explain their work to new and existing supporters and also to secure future funding.
