Broadcast quality skills and services from ex-BBC freelancer
I began to learn about managing digital media camera files and camera cards when they were first introduced to BBC camera crews back in 2004. Since then, I have gained a wealth of experience in the safe management of many different types of digital media and various codecs including a variety of software applications that support them. I have a diligent and dedicated approach to ensuring that any workflow is safely backed up from camera cards by using mirrored storage drives and RAID arrays.
As a filmmaker and editor (usually filming my own material), I have a strong understanding of the different types of shots and the essential audio needed which together make either a simple or a complex edit work well. As well as filming on my own initiative, I am also experienced in being directed and working as part of a crew. I have many years of experience of filming with a wide range of makes and models of cameras. Working as a freelance cameraman, I am proficient in the recording of contributor sound, sync sound and atmos audio tracks using a variety of microphones.
Technical Creative Consultant
An experienced Broadcast Technical and Creative Professional with first class technical credentials gained from a successful career across several world-renowned organisations including the BBC, British Aerospace and Royal Air Force. Key strengths include: demonstrating extensive knowledge of broadcast software operations, video media production and asset management; managing specialist technical teams, providing guidance & trusted support to technical & non-technical staff; proactively resolving problems in complex post-production environments to improve operational efficiency; and managing workflows & procedures to drive at-pace delivery and to ensure adherence to post-production and transmission deadlines.
As a BBC trained post-production digital video editor, I have pursued my own freelance career since 2009 and have over 15 years experience in this field. As an experienced Avid video editor, I have an aptitude for creating visual stories by selecting the best of the filmed footage available. I am also skilled at constructing a narrative in the edit (even when a project has not been storyboarded or shot listed). I am well practiced in, and have a passion for, editing music-based projects.
I am a friendly and highly resourceful videographer and started using video cameras over 30 years ago. I bring passion, commitment and dedication to all of my commissions and enjoy working with clients to deliver stylish results on time and on budget. I deliver a range of projects that engage, promote, educate and entertain to all platforms from online through to network television. I have a positive can-do attitude and work efficiently on my own or as part of a team.
During many years at the BBC, I undertook the training of production and post-production colleagues in all aspects of broadcast video and short film production. Since becoming a freelancer, I have continued to undertake the training of a wide range of people from beginners through to more experienced individuals. For this training, I draw upon the knowledge gained from my practical experience, a variety of industry courses and my previous professional broadcast experience. I am a TPMA/ICTP qualified trainer.
My passion for filmmaking began in my early teenage years which eventually led me to work for the BBC in the making of television programmes. My wide-ranging technical and creative skills combined with my excellent people skills enable me to be an effective, skilled and efficient filmmaker. Clients that have commissioned my video production skills have included the BBC, British Airways and The Koestler Trust. In addition, I have been commissioned by a range of creative agencies and many artistic individuals. I possess a natural talent and flair for managing projects as well as filming and editing together pictures, sound and music to form a strong narrative.
